Decorations

Our decoration policies are designed for you to honor your loved ones while maintaining the beauty and sacredness of our consecrated grounds.

Spring/Summer Decoration Guidelines

Appropriate decorations may be placed year-round on the base of an upright monument as long as they do not interfere with the daily care of the cemetery.

Memorial Day decorations will be placed on Monday the week prior to Memorial Day. After the holiday, all decorations will be discarded 10 days from Memorial Day.

Winter Decoration Guidelines

Gravesites

Appropriate artificial decorations may be placed Nov. 2 through March 31. Items such as grave blankets that cover the ground must be removed by March 1. Grave blankets and anything that impedes growth will be removed in early March. All other decorations left on gravesites after March 31 will be removed.

Vases

We recommend that vases be left turned down in the cemeteries during the winter months. If you have any questions regarding these policies, please contact St Paul's Parish Office.

Spring clean-up begins in early March, weather permitting, and all winter decorations are removed at this time. Fall clean-up begins in October and all summer decorations are removed at this time.

Responsibilities for each Parish

St Ignatius, Brunswick and St Paul, Plainview will share the cost of mowing, spraying and any other incurred cost (eg. Tree removal, repairs, road paving etc.) spent on the cemetery.

St Paul will bill St Ignatius at the end of the calendar year the cost spent on the upkeep of the cemetery. [Cost will be split evenly 50/50]

St Ignatius, Brunswick and St Paul, Plainview will each be responsible for either the spring or fall cleanup (to be determined by the Pastors)

Cemetery History

Through the efforts of John McMahon, a parish trustee, two acres of land north of and adjoining Plainview’s Pleasant View Cemetery were secured on June 16, 1905, for a cemetery. The land was purchased from John and Ida Cox for $200, then platted and fenced for $100. Two children, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Smith and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John McMahon, were the first to be buried there.

In 2002 a granite altar and crucifix were added to the St. Paul-St. Ignatius Cemetery, the corpus being donated by Paul and Marge Haverkamp in memory of their daughter, Jolene Haverkamp.
