Cemetery History

The origin of St. Mary's Cemetery dates back to June 15, 1898. At that time approximately two acres of land were released to the mission by Henry Bruegman. The two acre plot was officially deeded to St. Mary's from Leonard Schmitz Sr. on April 12, 1904. The cemetery is located one mile northwest of the church.

There were burials from the Mission, but the first burial from the parish of St. Mary's of the Seven Dolors was that of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Goeres on October 10, 1904. Since that time 319 burials (61 youth and 258 adults, including four priests and one nun) have been made from the church in the past 75 year period.

In the spring of 1976, St. Mary's decided to enlarge the cemetery. During the summer of that year, 1.7 acres of land was purchased from Marie Hoffman. The land was officially deeded to St. Mary's on May 17, 1977. The additional land allowed a drive to be constructed within the cemetery and also more burial space.

In November of 1976, the parishioners removed portions of the old fence and some decaying trees. A chain link fence with brick pillars was completed in the summer of 1978.

One feature of St. Mary's Cemetery is the large crucifix which overlooks the cemetery. Cemetery maintenance is taken care of by St. Mary's parishioners.
